Enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) began in July of 1991. This law was made to protect the rights of the people with disabilities by ensuring sufficient access to services and goods as well as preventing workplace discrimination. ADA Signage is needed in public places within this law. The law provides specific requirements on the specifics of the twelve signs plus the location of the signs. Characters (including letters and numbers) on an ADA sign shall possess a width to height ratio between 3:5 and 1:1. Characters shall also have a stroke width to height ration between 1:5 and 1:10.
Characters shall have a minimum height of 3 inches. The minimum height is dependent upon measuring an uppercase “X”. Viewing distance will probably be considered, potentially making the characters taller than 3 inches. Signs Atlanta will determine the right size for that characters.
Letters and numbers has to be raised at the least 1/32 of the in (minimum). Characters shall be upper case as well as in sans serif or simple serif font. Additionally, all characters will be possess the associated Grade 2 Braille. Raised characters shall be 5/8 inch thick at least and no higher than 2 inches. All pictograms will need to have the equal verbal description directly below. The border of the pictogram shall be a minimum of 6 inches tall.
All characters must appropriately contrast with their background. What this means is dark characters on the light background or light characters on a dark background. The setting and all characters shall be a non-glare finish.
Signs will probably be installed on the wall nearest the latch side of the door if permanent signage is provided. If no surfaces is accessible about the latch side, the sign needs to be placed on closest wall. The ADA sign shall be installed 60 inches across the finished floor to the horizontal centerline from the sign. The sign will probably be installed so that signage is unobstructed and does not hinder the whole process of the doorway.
